1 Hour Left on Jerry Garcia Memorabilia

Photographer Gene Anthony was there for the birth of all of it — the 1967 Human Be-In, the Summer of Love, the Haight-Ashbury streets where the Grateful Dead were still the neighborhood band before they were a national phenomenon. This 1967 color lithograph captures Garcia at that exact hinge in history, when the whole culture was crystallizing around a few blocks of San Francisco. Signed by the artist and mounted on archival board, it is the undisputed centerpiece of this sale: a photograph turned artwork from the instant a movement found its face.

Wolfgang's was an expression of one of Bill Graham's treasured roles, the hometown club owner who could provide an intimate place for musicians to connect with their listeners in a respectful, nurturing and deeply meaningful environment. Jerry treasured his duets with longtime friend and colleague John Kahn, but just as meaningful was the fact that he could do so at the club named for his old friend Bill. This lot pairs two Wolfgang's matchbooks, each carrying a fan's handwritten note tying it to a Jerry Garcia and John Kahn appearance (one dated 8/28/1984).
