Last night, Bob Wagner & Friends performed at Essex Junction, VT’s Champlain Valley Exposition. Billed as the Honky Tonk Hoedown, the event featured multiple acts as well as an attempt to host the world’s largest square dance. And, as he hinted on social media before the show, Wagner brought out a few special guests during his set. Of note, Mike Gordon and his daughter Tessa emerged to play on “Foolish Heart,” “It Rains Everywhere I Go” and “One Of These Lonesome Mornings.” It was a natural collaboration: Wagner joined Gordon’s solo band last year and the two musicians have collaborated around Burlington, VT frequently ever since. In addition, another Vermont hero, Grace Potter sat in for a version of Dolly Parton’s “9 To 5,” which served as a tribute to the country singer.

Medeski, Martin & Wood drummer Billy Martin has offered an update after he was involved in a car accident in July. Martin broke his right hand, forcing him to cancel some summer appearances.
The band walked out one by one in costume, nodding to The Shining before ever hitting a note, then settled into a set built on soaring three and four part harmonies, blue chip Dead outlaw tunes, and a back half that got appropriately foggy. Writer Nick Paumgarten, of The New Yorker, put it simply in the liner notes included with this release: "The Shred has the Shine."

Umphrey’s McGee co-founders Brendan Bayliss and Joel Cummins have confirmed a pair of acoustic Midwest gigs. This fall, the guitarist and keyboardist will come together for shows at Whitestown, IN’s Moontown Brewing Company on November 5 and Peoria, IL’s Kenny’s Westside Pub on November 6, with a portion of proceeds from both gigs going to the Cummins Educational Scholarships.

Béla Fleck will release his all-star January 8, 2022, show at Nashville’s Ryman Auditorium on October 16 as a 2CD, 3LP set, Live Heart: My Bluegrass Heart at the Ryman. The concert, which took place during a major East Coast blizzard, celebrated the release of My Bluegrass Heart, which would go on to win the 2022 Grammy for Best Bluegrass Album, and featured appearances by Sam Bush, Michael Cleveland, Jerry Douglas, Stuart Duncan, Sierra Hull, Edgar Meyer, Justin Moses, Mark Schatz, Billy Strings, Bryan Sutton, Tony Trischka and Molly Tuttle.

The National’s Aaron Dessner will join Noah Kahan for a special appearance in Los Angeles tomorrow, September 3. Dessner, who produced Kahan’s 2026 release The Great Divide, will appear with Kahn during a conversation and performance at the Ray Charles Terrace at Grammy Museum L.A. Live.

Spafford brought August to a close with a series of East Coast dates. On Thursday, August 27, the group rolled into New Haven, CT’s Toad’s Place and welcomed Lotus guitarist Tim Palmieri to the stage. Palmieri, a longtime area resident who pops up regularly in Connecticut when not on tour, emerged at the end of Spafford’s first set for the Pink Floyd classic “Run Like Hell.”

A mix of funk musicians will come together for a special show timed with Phish’s return to Commerce City, CO’s Dick’s Sporting Goods Park. On Saturday, September 5, Cervantes’ Masterpiece Ballroom will host the next installment of The Phunk Sessions, with the music slated to kick off at 11:30pm. The night will bring together George Porter Jr. (The Meters), Ivan Neville (Dumpstaphunk), Tony Hall (Dumpstaphunk), Jennifer Hartswick (Trey Anastasio Band), Nick Cassarino (The Nth Power), Deven Trusclair (Dumpstaphunk), Kanika Moore and Nate Miller. Meanwhile, Squeaky Feet will perform in Cervantes’ Other Side.

On Monday, Tedeschi Trucks Band performed at Bethel, NY’s Bethel Woods Center for the Arts, which is located on the site of the original 1969 Woodstock festival. Lukas Nelson opened the night and as a nod to Woodstock debuted a tune by one of that seminal event’s enduring acts. Partway through the set, Nelson debuted his take on The Band’s “Up on Cripple Creek,” which was included on their 1969 self-titled album. (They are believed to have performed the cut live for the first time a few months after Woodstock.)
