Charles Lloyd honors Zakir Hussain with Sangam & Friends, a new collection of recordings that the legendary saxophonist and flutist made with the late Tabla master after their collaboration in Sangam. Set to release on July 24 via Blue Note, the record preserves the esteemed artists’ natural musical affinity in newly uncovered tapes from an unfinished project, along with songs from the Sangam archives featuring their trio mate Eric Harland. To preview the album, Lloyd has shared the steady and kinetic lead single “Jai Ganga.”

Bob Wagner has spent the better part of his career defining what it means to be the consummate musical anchor. As a trusted sideman, sharp producer, and intuitive collaborator, the Burlington-based guitarist has spent decades elevating other people’s visions, most recently in his role as a driving force in Mike Gordon’s solo band. As they’ve begun touring, Gordon has actively stepped away from the microphone, handing the spotlight over to Wagner to showcase a batch of gritty, soulful originals. It’s a massive (and well-deserved) vote of confidence, serving as the perfect runway for I’ve Been Down, Wagner’s stunning debut solo LP on Royal Potato Family Records.

RECAP

Bob Dylan’s artistic drive ceases to waver. During his latest tour stop at the open-air Cuthbert Amphitheater in Eugene, Ore., the 85-year-old maven of song shuffled his setlist some, moving “Watching the River Flow” to slot one before locking into a familiar run of material that cleared a path for “I Shall Be Released.” The late ’60s masterpiece took the set’s final position and marked a monumental milestone, having been shelved since June 7, 2008. Its arrival ended an 18-year pause and underscored Dylan’s current affinity for crafting a lasting concert impression.

The bubblegum smack of synth that introduces “Genius of Love” holds a special place in the hearts of Tom Tom Club fans. Bold and assertive, the instrumentals scorn the group’s debut self-titled record, trailing the typewriter clicks and subsequent ring of new waves beckoning to early hip hop trends asserted on “Wordy Rappinghood.” Now, 45 years after their debut, Chris Frantz and Tina Weymouth’s Tom Tom Club project is gearing up for the release of the three-decade boxing of Let There Be Love via Rhino – a 7LP and 6CD collection arriving July 24.
