Following an energizing opening day, the Newport Folk Festival continued over the weekend at Fort Adams State Park. The low-key, welcoming vibe of the event allows artists to mingle freely with audience members. It also supports collaborative performances across the site.

Over the weekend, Widespread Panic closed out their extended West Coast summer tour with three nights at the Orpheum Theater in Los Angeles. This was the band’s return to the Orpheum after performing two shows at the venue in 2014. During each of these shows the band revisited some classic material, offering numerous fans the opportunity to experience songs they had long been chasing.

On May 7, 1994 at the Bomb Factory in Dallas, Phish performed a “Tweezer” for the ages. That evening the band started its second set with “Loving Cup,” then “Sparkle,” after which the remainder of the evening was a “Tweezerfest,” with the band going in and out of various songs while returning to “Tweezer.” Nearly 19 years later, Mike Gordon identified it as a memorable evening and selected it for Live Phish 18. As a result of that memorable performance in Dallas, after which Phish began to open up “Tweezer” more regularly, a number of fans anticipated that the group’s 94th performance at Madison Square Garden, would nod to 1994 with a similar extended “Tweezer” of some stripe.

Gov’t Mule has returned to the stage for their The Kicking In Your Stall Tour. The group opened the summer run on Wednesday, July 22 with a sold-out show at Tree House Brewing Company in South Deerfield, MA. That two-set performance included the Mule’s first version of ZZ Top’s “Jesus Just Left Chicago” since 1/20/25. The band then moved on to Hammondsport, NY and another full house on Friday.

Bon Iver’s Eaux Claires Festival returned for the first time in eight years on Friday and Saturday. Once again it took place in Eau Claire, Wisconsin, drawing together a variety of artists, musical and otherwise.

The String Cheese Incident traveled to Oregon for two shows over the weekend. On Friday the group performed at the Cuthbert Amphitheater in Eugene. Then on Saturday, SCI moved on to Britt in Jacksonville. Both gigs featured appearances from longtime friends of the band.

Old Crow Medicine Show’s new album Union Made continues to elicit enthusiasm. The record reflects on 250 years of American history in its lyrical themes. Still, as noted in our review of the album, “Union Made has all the stacked harmonies, furious picking and sing-along choruses you’d expect from Old Crow.”

My Morning Jacket returned to the stage this weekend. The group had been off the road since late May and is playing only select dates this summer before an appearance at Hardly Strictly Bluegrass in October followed by an extended run at San Francisco’s Fillmore.
