A cross-generational mix of musicians, politicians, fans, family members and close friends gathered in San Francisco on Saturday afternoon for a free, public memorial for Bob Weir. Billed as the Grateful Dead co-founder’s Homecoming, the celebration of life took place in Civic Center Plaza, which is nestled between Bill Graham Civic Auditorium, City Hall and other important government buildings, drawing an estimated crowd of around 25,000.

Following the public Homecoming memorial for Bob Weir, a festival-sized mix of musicians came together to honor the Grateful Dead co-founder at San Francisco’s The Warfield last night. Billed Howling Wolves: A Tribute To Bobby Weir, the last-minute show–organized by Dayglo, 100x and The Warfield to benefit the Furthur Foundation–was promoted as Grahame Lesh & Friends with “very special guests,” which ended up nodding to several different eras of Weir’s signature career.

On January 18, Joe Russo’s Almost Dead retook the stage at The Capitol Theatre. The ensemble’s final appearance in a string of three concerts, which were each marked by the guest arrivals of longtime band contributors and key compositions that delineated the importance of the late Bobby Weir’s pen and performance, saw Sunday’s finale get underway with a classic pairing of Weir/ John Perry Barlow’s sister songs, “Lost Sailor” > “Saint of Circumstance.” Later, during the evening’s encore, they revealed a Richard Thompson rarity, “1952 Vincent Black Lightning.”

Sphere Entertainment Co., the State of Maryland, Prince George’s County, and others have come together with a shared ambition to bring a new venue to the East Coast. According to an official press release, the venue “would be the second in the U.S. and first to utilize a smaller-scale design model.” The state-of-the-art entertainment hub is projected to pop up at National Harbor, located in the vicinity of Washington, D.C.’s metropolitan area.

The Avett Brothers, now 26 years and 12 studio albums into their tenure at the apex of Americana, have reflected on their origins today with the release of an archival music video for “Matrimony.” The storied trio of Seth and Scott Avett and Bob Crawford all feature in the long-lost visual accompaniment to their 2006 track, which captured the frenzied energy of a pivotal moment in their development on Super 8 film before vanishing into storage for two decades.

He joins founding members Adam Aijala (guitar), Ben Kauffman (bass) and Dave Johnston (banjo), along with mandolin player Nick Piccininni, who has been with the group for six years.
