As Jazz Feat closes out today, we take one last trip to the Big Easy with another selection of archival selections.
“It was outrageous,” declares Lyrics Born, the Bay Area MC whose wonderfully detailed story “I Got It (What You Need?)” kicks off the album in high style. “It was amazing,” he raves. “They started at 12:30 and played until 4 a.m. without a break. It was bonkers!”
Page McConnell: My dad spent a lot of time in New Orleans in the ‘50s and just loved the music. He encouraged me to consider schools there, so I always had an appreciation for the town. I ended up going to college in Dallas for a bit in the early ‘80s and that’s when a friend of mine played me The Neville Brothers and I started getting into their music
Dumpstaphunk, the quintet from New Orleans with two bassists led by Ivan Neville (son of Aaron), has a few cards stacked in their favor. There’s that last name, Neville, shared by Ivan and guitarist Ian (son of Art). There’s the fact that you’ve probably already heard at least one member of the band play, given that they’ve worked with a wide array of artist ranging from The Rolling Stones to Trey Anastasio to Beyoncé.

Though Aaron Neville has steadily recorded over the years, Apache is a welcome return to the classic R&B, soul and funk sounds that earned him a reputation as the sweetest voice in New Orleans’ first family.
