RECAP

Bob Dylan’s artistic drive ceases to waver. During his latest tour stop at the open-air Cuthbert Amphitheater in Eugene, Ore., the 85-year-old maven of song shuffled his setlist some, moving “Watching the River Flow” to slot one before locking into a familiar run of material that cleared a path for “I Shall Be Released.” The late ’60s masterpiece, which The Band recorded on their debut album, Music From Big Pink after initially working with Dylan on the tune, took the set’s final position and marked a monumental milestone, having been shelved since June 7, 2008. Its arrival ended an 18-year pause and underscored Dylan’s current affinity for crafting a lasting concert impression.

The behind-the-scenes story of Bob Weir's orchestration project: his vision of hearing the Grateful Dead's songs "dressed to the nines" in the lush tones of a symphony orchestra, alongside a collection of essays exploring the deeper threads of the band's lyrics. Written by two of the four co-founders of the orchestration project, this two-part book chronicles the journey from its inception.

Bob Wagner has spent the better part of his career defining what it means to be the consummate musical anchor. As a trusted sideman, sharp producer, and intuitive collaborator, the Burlington-based guitarist has spent decades elevating other people’s visions, most recently in his role as a driving force in Mike Gordon’s solo band. As they’ve begun touring, Gordon has actively stepped away from the microphone, handing the spotlight over to Wagner to showcase a batch of gritty, soulful originals. It’s a massive (and well-deserved) vote of confidence, serving as the perfect runway for I’ve Been Down, Wagner’s stunning debut solo LP on Royal Potato Family Records.

Bleachers are currently on the road in support of their fifth full-length album, Everyone for Ten Minutes. Over the weekend, the group’s Bleachers Forever tour rolled into Chicago for shows at The Salt Shed and, on Sunday, Chris Thile made a surprise appearance with the Jack Antonoff-led outfit. The Nickel Creek/Punch Brothers mandolinist–who is based in the New York area but was in the Windy City for a performance with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra the following day–emerged to join Bleachers for “Margaret,” a song Antonoff wrote and recorded with Lana Del Rey for her 2023 album Did You Know That There’s a Tunnel Under Ocean Blvd that references his now wife, the actress Margaret Qualley. He then remained on stage for the Bleachers original “Isimo,” from the 2023 self-titled Bleachers album, and the non-album single “Merry Christmas, Please Don’t Call.”
