“I didn’t really know Bob until the last 10 years. Even though I met him about 20 ago, I didn’t spend any hangout time with him,” Oteil Burbridge indicates, while chronicling his connection with his Dead & Company bandmate Bobby Weir. “I wasn’t a Deadhead, but I became the bass player because we shared a philosophy. We worshiped the same God and that God is complete musical freedom.”

Irish musician Glen Hansard has passed away. The BBC first reported that he died in single-vehicle motorcycle crash. The accident took place this morning around 4:30 AM in Dublin. Hansard was 56.
Released in 1978, the album introduced an all-new repertoire including the Garcia-Hunter penned favorites "Rubin and Cherise," "Gomorrah," "Palm Sunday," and the album's title track. Garcia often cited Cats Under the Stars as his favorite of all his albums, saying, "That's the one that I'm happiest with, from every point of view in which I operate on that record."

The latest installment of the Dave’s Picks archival series of Grateful Dead shows, features a fan-favorite late-era Boston gig for Vol. 59. In late September 1991, the group, which then included Bruce Hornsby on piano, returned to Boston Garden for the first time since 1982. Dave’s Picks 59 presents the climactic sixth and final show from that run.

Last night Billy Strings appeared at the PeoplesBank Arena in Hartford, CT. Strings and his band have been routing through New England, on a tour that will next take them to the Bethel Woods Center for the Arts in Bethel, NY on Friday and Saturday. Tuesday’s show featured some song debuts and shared vocal responsibilities.

In mid-May Primus released A Handful of Nuggs. This four-track EP which was initially available via digital platforms, presented the trio’s current incarnation with new drummer John Hoffman, who joined the band last February.

While we’re not yet in late-summer mode, bands and fans are beginning to think about their year-end show-travel plans. To this end, Pigeons Playing Ping Pong have announced their late December tour itinerary. The Baltimore-based quartet will greet the New Year from the stage in Boston. On Wednesday, December 30, the group will appear at the Brighton Music Hall with Big Blitz in the opening slot. Then on Thursday, December 31 PPPP will perform on Lansdowne St. at the House of Blues. TAUK will server as the NYE opener.
