Phish returned to Madison Square Garden last night, Dec. 28, to set off their long-awaited 2025 New Year’s Eve residency. The foundational jamband’s 88th engagement at the World’s Most Famous Arena set high expectations for their 18th annual year-end run, showing a band rejuvenated after a spell away from the stage and prepared to cap off another year of musical achievement with four very special performances.

On Sunday, Dec. 28, Gov’t Mule initiated its New Year’s Eve run, performing the first in a series of three concerts built around the looming firework displays and champagne toasts as the clock strikes midnight. Last night’s live show occurred at the Proctors Theatre in Schenectady, N.Y. During the event, the band delivered two thrilling sets before bringing out Reeves Gabrels for a musical reunion that simmered on pieces from Alice Cooper, Humble Pie, and The Faces. The guest guitarist had previously joined Gov’t Mule on multiple occasions, and as recently as one of their 2023 Jazz Fest appearances.

Banjo prodigy Gabe Hirshfeld has passed away. The Berklee College of Music graduate, known for his co-founding of The Lonely Heartstrings Band, which released a successful series of records and toured nationally, while evoking the spirit of the great Earl Scruggs, succumbed to a long-term health issue stemming from an organ transplant the artist received earlier this year and, more recently, spine decompression. He was 36 years old.
