Jack DeJohnette, the audacious jazz drummer known for his innovative and bold drive behind the kit while backing genre greats over a 60-year tenure, has passed away. The artist, who lent his talents and dexterity as both a bandleader and sideman, died on Sunday evening, October 26, according to his loved ones. DeJohnette was 83 years old.

“I went to the US Festival in 1982 when I was a freshman in college. I’d grown up in Palo Alto and I’d seen the Dead a couple of times at that point, but they never really made that big of an impression on me. Then that morning, when it was Breakfast with the Dead, I was really struck by what I experienced,” reflects journalist Jim Newton, author of the new book Here Beside the Rising Tide: Jerry Garcia, The Grateful Dead, and An American Awakening.

On Saturday, Oct. 25, moe. took their Fall Tour to Nashville, Tenn.’s Brooklyn Bowl Nashville. While rapidly reaching the last stretch of a year of touring that celebrated their 35th anniversary and the release of Circle of Giants, their 10th studio album, the foundational jamband has continued to deliver outstanding performances bolstered by unexpected setlist surprises. In Music City, the sextet continued this trend with a new cover honoring a Nashville icon, featuring support from Emma Derhak.

On Saturday, Oct. 25, Daniel Donato touched down in Port Chester, N.Y. for another stop on his cross-country fall tour. Onstage at The Capitol Theatre, the celebrated Nashville axeman and his Cosmic Country ensemble tore through a two-set showcase of their tried and true favorites, including treatments of “Lady Justice,” “Sunshine In The Rain (Strange Presence),” “Half Moon Night,” “Fortunate Sparrow,” “Blame the Train” and “Sugar Shack.” To finish off the performance, Donato recalled a previous experience on the historic stage when he joined in Phil Lesh’s Phil & Friends ensemble.

Brian Ross Weitz, better known as Animal Collective’s Geologist, has announced his debut solo album, Can I Get a Pack of Camel Lights? Set to release on Jan. 30 via Drag City, Geologist’s forthcoming project ends his tenure as the band’s only member without an independent studio release and showcases a new frontier in his signature brand of sonic experimentation. To preview the set, he’s shared “Tonic,” alongside a music video directed by Molten Synapse.
