Last week, The Rolling Stones formally unveiled their next studio album, Foreign Tongues. Set to release on July 10 via Capitol, the legendary rock act’s next release follows 2023’s Hackney Diamonds, which launched a new era of activity after an 18-year break in new material, with Andrew Watt once again in the producer’s chair and contributions from high-profile peers like Paul McCartney, Robert Smith, Steve Winwood and The Red Hot Chili Peppers’ Chad Smith. Though their return has already inspired fan fervor, due in part to their cryptic promotional strategy, Keith Richards has confirmed that the band will not take the project on the road this year.

The ensemble’s latest performance consisted of a packed single set display ahead of a two-track encore, which guest fiddler Jake Renick Simpson accentuated at select times. The aforementioned guest helped the band draw on its classic sound and golden days with Boyd Tinsley, while administering another layer of live history.

Sturgill Simpson has spent his career defying expectations, moving from outlaw country traditionalist to psychedelic provocateur, and Sound & Fury finds him fully committing to a hard-driving, synthesizer-soaked rock vision. Paired with a Netflix anime film, it's the kind of ambitious, format-busting move that feels more at home in the Grateful Dead's experimental tradition than in any contemporary country conversation.
