It’s not that Mikaela Davis defies expectations, it’s that she doesn’t countenance them.
Davis prefers to trust in the muse and her own instincts, which have propelled her forward, garnering the artist both critical approbation and public admiration.
This ethos has reached its creative apogee with her new album, Graceland Way.
It all began with Davis’ initial approach to the record, her second on the Kill Rock Stars label after 2023’s And Southern Star, which followed the 2018 Rounder release, Delivery.
“Usually when I’m going into the studio with a new album, all the songs are finished,” she explains. “The world of the album is clear, and I already know generally what I want it to sound like. But this was completely different from anything I’ve ever done.”
A remarkable cache of backstage passes from the band's final touring year. Unused passes are significantly rarer than used ones; they were typically held back by production staff for administrative and contingency purposes and were never distributed. That so many from a single season survived together as a group speaks to their origin within the Dead's inner production circle.
RECAP
Trey Anastasio rolled into Seattle last night for the second show on his acoustic tour. After setting off the run in Portland on Tuesday, the Phish frontman’s follow-up expanded the run’s repertoire with a new mix of old favorites stripped back to solo duet arrangements with pianist Jeff Tanski. None of the 23 tracks included in the set were repeated from night one, and one was a truly rare sighting.
Gene and Dean Ween spent decades building one of the most stubbornly uncommercial catalogs in American rock, moving from lo-fi bedroom cassette experiments to full orchestral arrangements and Nashville session players without ever losing the thread of their own strange vision. Several of these titles have been genuinely difficult to find on CD for years, making this the definitive physical home for a body of work that stretches from the anything-goes chaos of God Ween Satan to the baroque songcraft of The Mollusk and beyond.
