Over the weekend, Billy Strings unleashed a hometown hootenanny. The musician, known for his fast-picking and impulsive graze across a multitude of genres and styles, added a capstone to his Nashville weekend on Sunday night, following a guest-heavy rotation during the preceding concerts. Last night’s invitation brought the group’s fanbase to a second location, the Ryman Auditorium, after warm-ups at the Bridgestone Arena, for an all-originals delivery–a rare event for this group.

The celebrated Southern rock singer-songwriter and guitarist’s latest engagement on his Winter of Warren solo outing continued the trend of surprising performances he’s been delivering along his march down from Northern California, featuring a fistful of rarities and a live debut.

Last year, Radiohead made their triumphant return to the stage for their first public concerts since 2018. The legendary avant-rock ensemble’s run of 20 performances in Madrid, Bologna, London, Copenhagen and Berlin from Nov. 4 to Dec. 16 transcended expectations; in the round, encircled by the audience and a towering cage of translucent screens that rose and fell, Thom Yorke, Jonny Greenwood, Ed O’Brien, Colin Greenwood and Philip Selway pulled from a bank of 65 songs to deliver consistently stunning stagings. Over the weekend, Jeff Tweedy took his current Solo Tour, which supports the September release of his new triple album, Twilight Override, to Islington Assembly Hall in London. During the two-night stand, which took place on Friday, Feb. 20, and Saturday, Feb. 21, the formidable lyricist stacked his main frames with originals before finding pockets for debuts during the encores–takes on pieces by Richard & Linda Thompson, Brian Eno, T. Rex, The Kinks, and The Clash. Notably, all the musicians covered during the debuts were English acts.

Brandi Carlile has signed on for this year’s Newport Folk Festival. After a packed year that brought her full-length Elton John collaboration, Who Believes In Angels?, and her eighth solo studio album, Returning to Myself, the genre-defining Americana singer-songwriter will return to Newport, R.I.’s Fort Adams State Park to lead the festivities on Sunday, July 26.
