Tedeschi Trucks Band and Gov’t Mule’s shared series was bound to bring some very special concerts, and one night out from the run’s end, high expectations have been thoroughly surpassed. Since Sept. 3, the revered Southern rock outfits have celebrated a long history of musical kinship with four electrifying split bills in Toronto, Saratoga Springs, N.Y., Mansfield, Mass., and last night, Chicago. At their latest engagement, the bands blew through the Huntington Bank Pavilion at Northerly Island with a tempest of improvisational electric blues, treating Windy City fans to two packed sets lined with surprise sit-ins.

Last night, Sept. 8, Umphrey’s McGee returned home to Chicago for the official premiere of Blueprints, their long-awaited 15th studio album and first since 2022’s Asking for a Friend. Onstage at Garcia’s Chicago, the intimate and acoustically refined new venue, restaurant and jam haven in the heart of their Windy City stomping grounds, the genre-bending jam quintet marked the start of a new era with an evening packed with musical breakthroughs and fan service. One of the event’s most memorable highlights came as a last-minute surprise, when the group welcomed special guest appearances from Warren Haynes and Karina Rykman.

Reservoir Media has acquired the publishing catalog of jazz shapeshifter, trumpeter, and composer Miles Davis. The deal comes less than a year out from the artist’s 100th birthday, and grants the independent music rights company 90% of Davis’ music publishing rights, as well as the estate’s catalog income. While the official terms of purchase have not been publicly announced, The New York Times estimates that Reservoir paid between $40 million and $60 million.

Karl Denson is sketching out a plan and sharing details related to his Halloween celebration and upcoming 69th birthday concert. The renowned saxophonist, known for his self-titled Tiny Universe project, The Greyboy Allstars, and touring roles backing The Rolling Stones, will return to New Orleans on October 31, where he will perform at Tipitina’s.

A mix of musical voices have been added to the annual Rosh Hashanah services and musical offerings at New York’s Brooklyn Bowl. As previously reported, the 14th annual suite of High Holiday services will take place at New York’s Brooklyn Bowl the evening of September 22 and the morning of September 23. Rabbi Daniel Brenner will once again lead both services, while Jeremiah Lockwood will serve as the services’ musical director, guitarist and cantorial soloist. Isaac Gardner, John Bollinger, Jordan McLean, Stuart Bogie, Yula Be’eri and Yusuke Yamamoto and Tim Allen will serve as the house band both days.

Real Estate emerged from the DIY New York club scene sounding fully formed, dropping their self-titled Woodsist debut in 2009 to immediate buzz and blogosphere accolades. That momentum helped them sign with another top-shelf label, Domino, in time for their sophomore set Days in 2011, which cemented their status as a career band and national headliners. So, when the group entered Wilco’s fabled Loft studio in 2013 to track what would become their third LP, Atlas, they arrived with both a well-earned sense of confidence and the desire to expand their sound beyond its original descriptors—without losing the hallmarks of their early work.

In July, King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard announced that they would no longer host their music on Spotify. Following a precedent set by early critics Deerhoof and Xiu Xiu, and since adopted by Godspeed You! Black Emperor, Cindy Lee, Hotline TNT, Skee Mask and more, the prolific, shape-shifting Australian psych ensemble attributed the move to an objection to Spotify CEO Daniel Ek’s investment in AI-powered military software.
