A cross-generational mix of musicians, politicians, fans, family members and close friends gathered in San Francisco this afternoon for a free, public memorial for Bob Weir. Billed as the Grateful Dead co-founder’s Homecoming, the celebration of life took place in Civic Center Plaza, which is nestled between Bill Graham Civic Auditorium, City Hall and other important government buildings, drawing an estimated crowd of around 25,000. The program came together in the days following Weir’s passing on January 10 and was organized by promoters Another Planet and Live Nation, the musician’s current management team Activist Artists and the Dead-aligned sound company UltraSound. Derek Featherstone of UltraSound served as the event’s lead producer.

On Wednesday evening, Widespread Panic put on the second in a series of four live engagements as part of its annual destination concert event Panic en la Playa, held at the Hard Rock Hotel in Riviera Maya, Mexico. After opening the oceanside festival on Tuesday with Nick Johnson subbing for Jimmy Herring, they maintained the chemistry they had established the night before and pushed the limits by reviving Curtis Mayfield’s “Pusherman” for the first time since 2021.

This officially licensed Grateful Dead Skull & Roses greeting card, designed by artist Lia Burke Libaire, brings the spirit of the Dead to your love notes, thank-yous, or any message worth sending.

Michael League is used to wearing many different hats, but these days, perhaps the best way to describe the Snarky Puppy co-founder, noted bassist and prolific songwriter is as a curator. As he speaks with Relix, League, who formed Snarky Puppy in Dallas but ascended to international acclaim while based in New York, is partway through a residency at the Manhattan Blue Note that will stretch through most of January. During the extended run, he will play in numerous different configurations, blurring the lines between sounds primarily classified as jazz, funk, folk and world music and debuting a slew of new original material.

Susan Tedeschi and Derek Trucks: Individually and together, their musical pedigrees and prowess are untouchable. But it’s the heart, honesty and full-band collaboration that makes Future Soul the most powerful album to date by the revered 12-piece Tedeschi Trucks Band. “I feel like this is the most unique record we've done," says Trucks. “It’s my favorite collection of songs that we've ever put on a record. From song to song, there's just not a weak spot.”

FLASHBACK

Civilians have no idea, and probably even think it's kind of funny. I mean, imagine how it looks in the newspaper: 65-year old bassist for '70s-peaking '60s rock behemoths rolls into town with a bunch of dudes whose names are probably totally unfamiliar to you if you didn't who the bassist was to begin with (and a singer you maybe remember from a few years back). And that's actually all well and good, because it meant that Deadheads could show up on nearly any of once-and-future Grateful Dead bassist Phil Lesh's eight nights in Manhattan and scoop up half-price tickets for $30 or so.
